Ipoh has known to be one of the
food heaven in Malaysia after Penang and
Malacca. like their most famous
Ipoh white coffee and
bean sprout chicken. To me, it's always the best city to visit for a short weekend getaway whenever I'm tired of KL city life as it's just a 2 hours journey from Penang or KL.
According to Ipohans. there are too many nice foods to recommend. Hence I've created this summarized post about Ipoh's foods to try out, along with some nearby attractions to visit during your weekend! They are almost
near to each other so you don't need to worry that you might wasted a lot of time travelling from different places!
Breakfast
#1. Restaurant Thean Chun on Jalan Bandar Timah
For breakfast, you can visit Restaurant Thean Chun
on
Jalan Bandar Timah for their famous
silky chicken noodles,
egg custard and
succulent pork satay - just across the road is the newly restored 120 years old
Concubine lane. Decorated with colourful walls and decorations, it's one of the main attractions of Ipoh these days. Refreshing drinks and desserts such as
coconut milk shake, soy and
tofu hua (tofu custard) can be found along this lane as well.
#2. Restaurant Sin Yoon Loong at Jalan Bandar Timah
Further down
Jalan Bandar Timah as well, you will find Restaurant Sin Yoon Loong where they served their famous
Ipoh white coffee. This is where Oldtown white coffee originated. The white coffee served here are very rich in flavor. Side the coffee with their
kaya & butter toast, you make a perfect breakfast.
A short 10-15 minute walk from there, you will find yourself at
Ipoh Padang, where the Perak flag can be seen flying high up in the air. Ipoh Padang is good for strolling after a satisfying breakfast.
Beside the field along
Jalan S.P.Seenivasagam, you will find a 104 years old high school build by the La Salle brothers in the year 1912. Its majestic English architecture is something to be marveled at.
On the other side of the field along
Jalan Tun Sambanthan, there are
a collection of wall mural arts done by artist Ernest Zacharevic that captured the essence of Ipoh. There are some hotels nearby with high rating and cheaper price, such as 1981 Guesthouse & Container Hotel.
#3. Funny Mountain Soya Bean along Jalan Theatre
After the walk, you can go for some refreshing
soya bean milk at Funny Mountain Soya Bean along
Jalan Theatre. Its famous for their cheap and delicious soya bean milk and tofu hua.
Lunch
#4. Dai Shu Geok (Big Tree Foot) at Jalan King
For lunch, there is a cheap and satisfying location which are popular among the locals and as well as tourists. It's the Big Tree Foot also known as "Dai Shu Geok". It sells wide range of their famous
stuffed fish paste (Yong Tau Foo) to go with your choice of noodles. This place is often packed and crowded especially during the afternoon but it's one of the must-try Ipoh food location.
There are also a few attractions one can go for example there are a few temples in Ipoh with free admission. They are
Sam Poh Tong, Ling Sen Tong and
Kek Look Tong. All the mentioned Chinese temples are admission free.
As for people that prefer a more relaxing walk, you can visit the
Gunung Lang Recreational Park located
off Jalan Kuala Kangsar. The admission fee (boat ride) is RM3 for adults and RM1.50 for children and senior citizens. This recreational park was built around a scenic backdrop of magnificent limestone hills. The main attractions are man-made cascading waterfall and campsites. One can also fish and canoe there.
Dinner
#5. Ong Kee Restaurant (across Lou Wong) at Jalan Yau Tet Shin
As for dinner, an Ipoh food trip cannot be completed without it's famous
Bean Sprout Chicken. But instead of heading straight for the famous Lou Wong Bean Sprout Chicken, locals here prefer Ong Kee Restaurant
which is situated across Lou Wong at
Jalan Yau Tet Shin. The noodles and the sweet soup goes so well together. The bean sprout is so crunchy and juicy and not forgetting the smooth and tender chicken. Ipoh Downtown Hotel is only 300m away from Ong Kee.
#6. Cowan Street Ayam Tauge & Koitiau at Jalan Raja Ekram
If this place is too crowded for you, there is an alternative which is Cowan Street Ayam Tauge & Koitiau located at
Jalan Raja Ekram. Their
fish balls are amazing.
A good way to end the night after all that amazing food will be to take a stroll along the
Kinta Riverfront Walk also known as the
mini I-city of Ipoh. Beautiful and colourful LED lights are decorated on the trees along the walk. It's a romantic place to be at with your loved ones.
